Learn upholstery skills on our upholstery courses.
Students on our weekly upholstery training courses work in small groups of mixed abilities and experience. New students are encouraged to begin with a small item of furniture such as a drop in seat, a small footstool, or even a headboard. All equipment is available to use, but students are welcome to bring their own tools if they prefer.
Advice and teaching is very hands on and students will learn upholstery at their own pace in a friendly and fun environment. Students with no experience of learning upholstery are welcome and will be taught the basic skills required to progress to a complete upholstery project. Students with some upholstery experience and who want to refine their skills or learn new techniques are equally welcome. The upholstery training courses are taught by Jan and Angela. Both are City and Guilds qualified and have previously taught upholstery and sewing for Kirklees College.
Both modern and traditional upholstery techniques are taught, so whether you want to learn how to use modern foam with staple guns, or traditional stuffing and webbing, you will find what you need at Manorhouse School of Upholstery.
What's included in the price?
Tools are available to use on the course. Materials and essentials such as tacks, staples and other ancillaries are available to buy at minimal cost. Also on offer is a wide variety of fabrics for purchase at below retail price. Refreshments are available on site for a minimal cost, and local shops offer a range of refreshments if required. (The money made from sales of tea and coffee is donated to a local charity at the end of each block of courses)
Pieces of furniture are not included but if new students are struggling to find a suitable item, assistance can be provided.
Most students bring their own item of furniture and spend a few pounds on material and essentials such as fixings to prepare an item to the stage where it is ready for a top cover. All that is then required is a metre or two of top cover fabric, the cost of which will vary depending on the type and size.
Individual or small group lessons can be booked at different times including evenings and weekends, and the content and level of the tuition can be tailored to particular needs.
Soft furnishing courses - blinds and curtains
These differ to our upholstery courses in that all students follow the same programme at the same pace. All students learn to make a sample blind which illustrates the techniques required to make a roman blind of any size. More advanced skills and techniques can be developed on further courses.
The courses run in our spacious and bright workshop in Almondbury, a mile from Huddersfield town centre. There is plenty of on-site parking for all students within the grounds of Thorpe Grange Manor. Open this file for parking information
Weekend courses - next course January 25th, followed by February 29th.
If you want something more intensive than the weekly courses, our 1 day (Saturday) weekend upholstery courses include just about everything that you need to create a beautiful footstool. We run these a maximum of 12 times per year.
Created as an introduction to the skills of upholstery, your footstool project will start with a solid frame and legs. You will learn to use sewing and upholstery tools as well as the techniques and skills required to create a footstool. All you need to choose is the fabric for your top cover.
You will learn how to work with fabric to get the best from the pattern, how to apply foam, how to fold and cut corners, how to shallow button and how to finish a project. You will also have a choice of waxes to finish your legs to complement your chosen fabric. The weekend upholstery course is led by Jan Dyson.
We can also tailor a weekend course around small group needs and particular projects or skills.
